Kehena Beach on the Big Island of HawaiiKehena Beach is located in the Kalapana area on the Big Island of Hawaii. Some people call it Dolphin Beach - it is a good place to see dolphins and maybe even swim with them. It is considered a nude beach, although this is not legal in Hawaii, but the overworked police in Puna have better things to do than bust some people swimming naked. Besides, the beach is so isolated no one will just happen upon it. Be careful about taking children to the area. My kids seeing nudism wouldn't bother me, but there may also be some people smoking funny cigarettes - which I don't like around my kids. Swimming is dangerous here. A few people get swept out in the current every year and have to be rescued. Bodysurfing may be OK, but just hanging out seems to be the most common activity.
Directions to Kehena from Keaau: Head south on Highway 130. Continue for 20 miles until you reach the junction with Hwy 137 (if you dead-end into the lava just turn around and take your first right). Take the junction road and turn left on Highway 137. Around the 19 milemarker you will start to see cars parked on both sides of the road. Park wherever you can find a spot - there is a small parking area that may be filled. Take the trail on the left of the parking area. Trail is steep and dangerous. ![]() ![]() This is a view of Kehena Beach from above. You can't see this from the road or the pullout, but only if you hike in the woods a little bit ![]() The view of the beach from the top of the trail going down ![]() The trail down is rocky and slow-going.
