Hilton Waikoloa Resort: Best Place for Family Vacations
The Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort is my absolute favorite hotel in all of Hawaii. We enjoyed spending the weekend there before we had kids, but now that we have one we try to get away every few months and go play here. It is expensive, but so worth it, and still cheaper than the stuffy hotels in the area that don't have anything to do except a beach. The one danger here is that you will stay on the grounds your entire vacation and never once see any of the Big Island. The Hilton is a huge hotel. It is so big that it normally has two trains and three or four boats running on the grounds to take people to their rooms. You leave your luggage with the valets and they deliver it to your room via underground tunnels. If you are planning on jumping right in the ocean be sure to have a bag you will carry with you with your swimsuits because you will beat your luggage to your room by about 30 minutes probably. The Hilton has 2 large (I mean really big) pools plus a smaller one. The two big ones have waterslides, and waterrfalls, There's also a camp for kids over 5. The Hilton Waikoloa of course has several hot tubs. It has the dolphin quest, a flamingo sanctuary, a wedding chapel, a volleyball net, large open fields, countless lounges, several restaurants, and a nearby shopping village with a nightly trolley. It's perfect. The Hilton Website is here, and you can also check Travelnow for sold-out dates, and disounted prices. ![]() One side of the Kona pool as seen from the drawbridge above. This was at 7 in the morning, before it started filling up with people. ![]() The other side as seen from the drawbridge. The large rock outcropping to the left of the picture is a waterfall. Usually there is water pouring over that. ![]() A better view. ![]() The view from the ocean-side path. Great place to see whales during whale season. There is even a massage table to our right here so you can get a massage and look at the view. ![]() Those buildings way off in the distance are still part of the Hilton. The grounds are huge. ![]() The kiddie area ![]() The dolphins in the dolphin lagoon on the grounds ![]() The building with the large pillars is the back side of the lobby. This one is in front of the bay by the ocean tower. ![]() A typically beautiful sunset as seen from anywhere on the grounds ![]() The grounds at dusk. Just when the sun starts to go down a hotel employee dressed in traditional Hawaiian garb runs through the grounds with a torch and lights all the gas torches. ![]() A large buddha statue on the grounds situated in a sea of lava on a point close to the ocean ![]() The grounds behind the ocean tower. There is a putting course back here. Not really miniature golf as there are no funny holes but similar. ![]() Another view of the putting course. ![]() This is the Kohala pool at ocean side of the Waikoloa. It has a shorter and faster slide than the waterslide at the other one, and it also has tiny slides for the really young kids. My boy started going on the small slides as soon as he could walk. He loves them. We could spend the whole day here.

This is the only place where there are rocks, but we like this corner because you can catch crabs, shrimp, and small fish in these rocks. ![]() This is the pier at the ocean tower, near the end of the line for the tram and all the restaurants. We were feeding these huge bone fish the rest of our lunch while waiting for the boat to pick us up. The boat runs through this waterway. ![]() The Hilton is just full of art like this. ![]() The koi pond under Imari, the Japanese restaurant. more big island articles |
