Best Activities in Kailua-Kona – Things to Do in Kona
Ok, here’s my list of the best, most-fun things to do in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii:
- Go Jet Ski – I just did this last weekend and I had such a great time. Especially if you’ve never been before, do this while you are here. The price is reasonable for an hour of fantastic fun (if you like motion).
- Go to the Beach There are only a few real beaches in directly in Kona – my favorite is Kahalu’u for the excellent snorkeling. Magic Sands is the best for boogie boarding, and the two by the Kailua Pier are the calmest for young kids.
- Go on the Fairwinds Boat to Kealakekua Bay – I have been on this tour several times. I’ve done a pretty detailed writeup on it here and don’t miss the dolphin story that relates to it. You may also want to consider renting a kayak to head out to the bay – that can be a lot of fun too.
- Go on the Atlantis Submarine – We took my son and my nephew out on the submarine, plus some visiting adult relatives. It was very interesting, and especially great for people who aren’t going to do a lot of snorkeling or try scuba diving. We saw shipwrecks and tons of fish and a pod of dolphins even came and followed us around. That was cool.
- Rent a Boat – We just did this! It was great! Here’s the website: Kona Boat rentals – and here’s my review and just imagine – you are in complete control of where you go and what you do. You can go see whales, look for dolphins, explore coves, snorkel, fish …. anything!
woohoo - Go Sport Fishing – I’ve done this several times. Very worth it.
So what’s your favorite thing to do in Kona?

Have to agree, it’s hard to do better than a day kayaking and snorkeling Kealakekua Bay.

Lisa, my daughter is getting married May 2nd, 2010 and we gave them a week at Hilton Waikoloa Resort for a wedding present. I am a preferred Hilton member and should be able to request a room and location within the resort. However, I have no idea what to ask for. Do you have a recommendation for newlyweds’ best room/tower location? Thanks

Yes, ask for the Lagoon tower, right in front of the dolphins, or near the dolphins.
