Expedia vs Orbitz vs Priceline - which airfare search is best to use?

I'm planning a trip to the mainland in January and I automatically started my search with Expedia because I am the most comfortable with them. My husband prefers Orbitz so we checked with them too. Searching for the best price, we also went to priceline to see what they had to offer.

Searching with Expedia is easy - they lay out the prices and the times with their airline comparison engine in a way that you can just glance at the results and tell exactly when the flight flies and what the price is. They first have you pick the best departure for you and THEN you go and pick the best return flight for you.

Then, we went to Orbitz - Orbitz does this thing where they lay out every possible option to fly ahead of time - so I literally had four pages of flights to go through and decide which one I wanted. So, if there was one flight to the mainland on ATA airlines, but I had to connect throught Honolulu on either Aloha, Hawaiian, or Go! airlines, then the ATA flight with Go! connector was one choice, the ATA flight with Aloha Connector was another choice, and the ATA flight with Hawaiian connector was another choice. Madness! I literally went through an entire page of flight choices without finding anything substantially different about any of the flights. Oh, and the prices were *the exact same* as the prices I found at Expedia. Ok, so forget Orbitz - too hard to read, on to Priceline.

Priceline operates like Expedia, giving you first a choice for departure, then a choice for return. ahhhh. Prices seemed practically the same, except Priceline kept telling me they weren't going to charge me a booking fee for the flights. That might have saved me $20 since I bought two tickets. However, I still think Expedia is easier to read and navigate. So I went back to Expedia and bought my tickets there. Easy.

From New Jersey or Philadelphia to Honolulu or Hilo

Ok, we are trying to book tickets for my sister-in-law and her daughter to come out and visit us for a little over two weeks. My husband prefers searching on Orbitz while I prefer Expedia.

She would prefer to leave from Atlantic City Airport (ACY) in New Jersey but past attempts have shown us that they likely do not have many flights that will connect to Hawaii. I searched just once, for completeness and found one Delta flight for $811. Not bad, but not what we want to pay.

So instead, all our searches will be done from Philadelphia Airport (PHL) in Pennsylvania

To Honolulu:

evening search on a friday in early february - lowest prices: American Airlines, 2 stops $572 - Continental 1 stop $654

Sunday evening search - lowest prices are American Airlines 1 stop for $569 and 2 stops for $572. Pretty good. Hmmm, maybe we should stop looking and start buying.

If I search straight through to Hilo, American Airlines is still giving me the best price at $654 with a connecting flight in Maui, not Honolulu. Interesting that the connecting price (interisland flight) is less than $100 - so they really can get good interisland prices when you book everything all at once.

A similar search on orbitz shows a price of $656 - $2 more.

From Austin, Texas to Honolulu, Oahu

I did some airfare searches on Expedia from Austin, TX (AUS) to Honolulu (HNL) Hawaii to continue determining trends and prices to the Hawaiian islands from the mainland. (Remember, a hop to one of the neighbor islands will cost about $140 roundtrip usually).

I found general average cheapest prices of:

April - between $577 and $780
May - $477 to $650
June - $620 to $800
July - $706 to $831
August - $637 - $829
September - $577 - $633
October - $627
November - $602 - $731
December - in the 500s early in the month, up to 800s near Christmas
January - $577
February $750

These seem a bit high for Texas, but so far are following typical yearly trends, although nothing is going up too high for summer travel yet.

Airtech Cheapest Fares to Hawaii Explained - $159!

Best for: students and those with flexible travel plans

Airtech is an airline "inside trader". They are a company that sells the empty seats on pre-scheduled flights. They normally put their clients on stand-by status, but to Hawaii, starting January 2006, they no longer use the standby tickets. Now they use e-tickets with confirmed/reseated seat booking. Check current Hawaii procedures to make sure nothing has changed.

As I write this, the one way price to Hawaii starts at $159! Sometimes, you will be able to find specials at Aloha or Hawaiian close to this low, and sometimes, maybe Hotwire might come up with a deal like this, but this is the lowest consistent price you will find.

The way it works is, you buy your Epass on the site. You can choose to leave from San Francisco or Los Angeles. When you are ready to fly you contact the airtech people and they start trying to get you a on a flight. The epass can be booked within 4 days of when you are going, and you will have a reserved seat - this is not standby.

They don't guarantee they can get you a seat, but they are pretty confident they can. Check out current policies - procedures.

Some comments from people who have used airtech

  • Digihitch article - This is an article about airhitch.com, but there are several comments from people who say they prefer airtech and have gotten great deals with little hassle.
